Tips For Having Your Puppy Spayed

Having your female puppy spayed is the responsible thing to do, both for the puppy and for the greater dog population. Dogs who are spayed cannot develop uterine cancer, which is quite common in female dogs. They also cannot accidentally become pregnant if they manage to run loose. Most veterinarians offer spaying services, and there are even some animal hospitals that specialize in spaying and neutering. Regardless of where, exactly, you have your female dog spayed, the following tips are likely to come in handy.
Get a few quotes, first
Different vet hospitals can have vastly different prices for spaying. One hospital may be able to charge less because they have staff dedicated just to spaying, for example. So, it is worth getting two or three different quotes before you choose a vet to spay your pup. You might be able to save a little money with this approach.
Follow the prep instructions
Your vet will likely tell you to have your dog avoid eating and drinking for a certain number of hours before the procedure. This is because your pup needs to be put under anesthesia to be spayed, and anesthesia can cause nausea and vomiting if the pet has eaten recently. This can be really dangerous, and even deadly, if they are under anesthesia. So, follow your vet's prep instructions carefully. Pick up all human food and drinks that your pup might get into without you realizing it. If you have other dogs, feed them separately from your pup leading up to the procedure.
Start feeding treats to prepare for medication
Your pup will likely be on a pain reliever when they come home from being spayed. This is usually a pill that you need to hide in a treat. Find some soft treats that your puppy loves, and start giving them to her before her spaying appointment. This way, she will already be familiar with them and love them when you give them to her with medicine in them.
When you do give your pup treats with medicine, give her a few unmedicated treats first, followed by the medicine, and then a few more plain treats. This helps keep her from associating the treats with a bad taste and rejecting them completely.
